It was one of the most remarkable moments in the Brazilian Grand Prix. Or rather, before the Grand Prix. Lance Stroll spun off the track on the formation lap, only to get stuck in the gravel. Before the race had even started, the race was already over for the Aston Martin Canadian - much to the dismay of former Dutch Formula 1 driver Giedo van der Garde.

In the podcast DRS: The Race Show, the former Caterham F1 driver could only think of one reason for the blunder: "The guy had a short fuse. How can you think of something like that, standing there and then thinking, 'I'll just go through the gravel pit back onto the track'. How stupid is that?"

According to Van der Garde, Stroll must have seen how Yuki Tsunoda had got completely stuck in a gravel trap earlier. Still: "And then he thinks: 'Yeah boy, I'm spinning now, wing probably broken, everyone thinks what a knobby guy I am'. Maybe he had a technical problem, we all don't know. And then, you know what; I put it in the gravel trap and go home."

Van der Garde sees unhappy Stroll in F1

Van der Garde wonders aloud whether Stroll has his place in Formula 1. "If you see a boy like that in the paddock as well, he is not happy, he is not cheerful, he does not look happy. I don't know if he has a lot of fun," said the former driver, who is currently an analyst. However, Van der Garde does admit that Stroll has had "pretty good" results this season. "He beat Alonso several times, he was really fast. Only I think they have a very difficult car."
