Verstappen and Team Redline end up on the podium at the 24 Hours of Daytona
- Cas van de Kleut
Competing in the virtual 24 Hours of Daytona event, Max Verstappen and his teammates at Team Redline finished in fourth place. However a change to the results has been reported, leading to the Dutchman gaining a position.
During his turn on the simulator, Verstappen struggled. The rain affected Team Redline and their drivers, Diogo Pinto, Chris Lulham and Verstappen. While racing on the virtual Daytona International Speedway circuit, Verstappen crashed and his team fell behind.
Nevertheless, his team crawled their way back to up in the standings. This allowed them to finish in fourth place with their #20 car in the GTP class. In a different category, the biggest prize did go to Team Redline's #171 car. Josh Thomson, Florian Lebigre and Gustavo Ariel finished first in the GTD class of the iconic sim race.
Verstappen and Team Redline still on the podium
In the aftermath of the Ferrari cheating controversy, the final results changed. The winning team, the #50 Scuderia Ferrari HP Esports Team, used an illegal move to avoid damage. Ole Steinbraten reportedly realised in the rain that he would not make it through Turn 3, after which he exited the game. A few minutes later, a teammate then continued driving instead. As a result, the team had only lost time as the car changed drivers in the pit lane.
On Monday, Team Redline then came out with a post on X saying that the team would achieve a podium position after all. iRacing has since confirmed that the Ferrari team has been disqualified and that Verstappen and his teammates have finished on the podium. First place went to the #001 Grid-and-Go.com Esports, and second place was secured by the #99 Apex Racing Team.
