Friday's practice results: Norris and Leclerc on top as Hamilton struggles

In FP1, Max Verstappen finished the first session only in fifth position, while Lewis Hamilton could not complete a final lap after a yellow flag caused by his ex-teammate, George Russell. The Briton finished in P12 only in the end as a result. The second Williams, Alexander Albon, was also towards the front, finishing in P6 and also ahead of George Russell, who span on his warm-up lap. Isack Hadjar was the quickest rookie, although he was not satisfied with his lap on the softs, he explained over the team radio. He finishes in P9.

Another driver that span was Oliver Bearman exiting Turn 10, and the Briton destroyed his Haas. A long repair job awaited the American team's mechanics ahead of FP2.

In the second free practice session, Charles Leclerc finished in P1 ahead of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Max Verstappen was only P7, more than six-tenths off the Monegasque. Lewis Hamilton only managed P5 behind a surprisingly quick Yuki Tsunoda. Racing Bulls' pace was confirmed by Isack Hadjar's sixth place. With Verstappen in P7, Nico Hulkenberg for Sauber, Lance Stroll for Aston Martin and George Russell for Mercedes rounded off the top 10.

Drivers ready for return to racing action

On Thursday, all 20 drivers returned to the paddock for F1's first media day of the year. Speaking to GPblog and others, Lando Norris said: "I'm just excited to have another crack at it and see what I can do and go up against any driver. I don't think I'm just gonna be racing against Max this year. I think it's gonna be Charles and Lewis. It's gonna be Oscar. It's gonna be both Red Bull drivers and Mercedes drivers too. You know? So, I look forward to all of the battles."

Whilst preparing for his first race with Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton also explained on Thursday why he is not feeling any pressure to perform with his new team. "I've been here a long, long time and done it time and time again. So I think for now it's more. I know, as I said, I know what it takes to do a good job, and that's what I want to deliver for myself, for myself and for my family, for this team that I really believe deserves success.

"And I can see like Carlos's experience in his new team just when you see such a large group of people that are clearly so passionate and driven and maybe have not had as much success as they would like or than they deserve, you just want to work towards and contribute to doing that," Hamilton concluded.
