Ratings | Verstappen stands out in Miami
- GPblog.com
The Miami Grand Prix was filled with excitement and several drivers showed their class at the Florida circuit. However, there were also drivers who had a lesser weekend. GPblog gives figures to the drivers after the race in the United States about their entire weekend.
Verstappen: 9.5
For Max Verstappen it was an almost flawless weekend in Miami. The Dutchman could do little in action on Friday and so it was clever that he was right on Saturday. A mistake in his second run cost him a better starting position. On Sunday, however, he made up for that with a dominant performance.
Leclerc: 9
Charles Leclerc did little wrong in Miami. The Monegasque again took pole, but was simply no match for the combination of the RB18 and Verstappen. He might have been able to defend a little harder, but was simply not fast enough on the medium tyres. In the final stages of the race he stepped up the pressure, but it was not enough to upset Verstappen.
Sainz: 7
Carlos Sainz made it difficult for himself on Friday with yet another crash, but on Saturday and Sunday, he was on top of his game. That he managed to keep Sergio Perez off the track is a great achievement considering the speed Verstappen displayed.
Perez: 7.5
Despite his teammate barely being able to make meters on Friday and also making a mistake in his second run, Perez was still unable to qualify ahead of his teammate. On Sunday he had problems with a sensor, but the Mexican could have at least created a better chance for himself on the mediums.
Russell: 7
With some help from the safety car, George Russell climbed to fifth place, but he had also forced that himself by pointing out that opportunity to his team. However, it does not take away from the fact that the Briton was painfully beaten by his teammate on Saturday and would not have finished ahead of Hamilton without the safety car.
Hamilton: 8
Lewis Hamilton drove a neat GP in Miami. The Briton showed on Saturday that he can still qualify well, but for a long time he was chasing Valtteri Bottas in the battle for P5. He snatched that fifth spot, but Russell passed him on new mediums. On old hard tyres, however, Hamilton could do little about that.
Bottas: 8
Valtteri Bottas drove an excellent qualifying session, but in the race he succumbed to the pressure again. With Hamilton and Russell on his heels, he went a little too wide and into the wall. He lost two spots, while up to that point he had managed to hold his place nicely.
Ocon: 8
Esteban Ocon threw away a chance of qualifying in the third free practice session, but on Sunday he made up for it by coming from the last spot on the grid to eighth and thus four points again.
Albon: 8.5
Alexander Albon continues to amaze at Williams. Once again the Thai from the back of the grid scored points for the team from Grove. Where he crossed the line in tenth place, an extra penalty for Alonso even doubled his points.
Stroll: 7.5
Lance Stroll drove a strong weekend for Aston Martin. The Canadian was involved in several incidents in the race and also received a caution flag for swerving on the straight, but a tenth place is his second point of this season for Stroll.
Alonso: 5
It was a messy weekend for Fernando Alonso. The pace wasn't really there for Alpine, but from the back of the grid Ocon did drive to eighth place. Alonso crossed the line in eighth place, but was (rightly) given two penalties. He was too eager and too wild in the duels costing his team points.
Tsunoda: 5
Yuki Tsunoda had qualified handsomely in the top ten, but in the race the young Japanese quickly fell back.
Ricciardo: 5
Daniel Ricciardo again failed to come close to his teammate this weekend in a Grand Prix where points never seemed attainable for the McLaren team.
Latifi: 5
Compared to his teammate, Nicholas Latifi's performance remains very poor. The rumours of a possible dismissal will not disappear after his performance in Miami.
Schumacher: 4
Mick Schumacher seemed to be on his way to his first points in F1 in a strong weekend, but a crash with none other than his mentor Sebastian Vettel ended it. The stewards didn't blame either of them, but when you're on your way to precious points for Haas for the first time, the German's action was simply too ambitious and came from too far away.
Magnussen: 3
Kevin Magnussen struggled with his teammate this weekend and never really seemed to get anywhere near the points. That frustration possibly accounted for his remarkable action in the final laps on Stroll.
Vettel: 5
Sebastian Vettel drove in the points, but was left empty-handed by a touch with Schumacher. The stewards ruled that there was no culprit, but Vettel could have looked a little better in his mirrors and left more room. Schumacher was too wild, but Vettel could have saved them by paying attention (as Sainz did in Perez's ambitious action).
Gasly: 6
Pierre Gasly drove a strong weekend, but a problem with his car ended his race. Before he came in, however, he hit Lando Norris in a fast section and they caused a safety car. Neither seemed to be really at fault for this (especially given the Frenchman's conditions).
Norris: 6
Lando Norris drove a solid weekend in Miami, but points were never in it for McLaren. The Briton fell back quickly in the race and at the circuit where brakes are so important, it's not surprising that performance was disappointing.
Zhou: 4
On Saturday, Guanyu Zhou did start to lose more and more ground on his teammate and had to work to close that gap. On Sunday, his race was over before he knew it, but that was due to a technical problem with his car.
