Hamilton talks about long wait without win: 'Challenging'

It took quite a lot of time for the seven-time world champion, but Lewis Hamilton has now stepped on the top step of the podium again in his home Grand Prix. At Silverstone, for the first time since the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP. The Briton talked about the wait leading up his victory.

After fighting for the world title with Max Verstappen in 2021, Hamilton found himself in a car that lacks the necessary speed to win races. Until the 2024 British GP, Mercedes only one two Grands Prix with George Russell - and the one in Austria in 2024 was thanks to a collision between Verstappen and Lando Norris. Now, Hamilton was once again victorious.

"I think ultimately, because it's been such a long time, it's been 900 and, someone just told me 946 days or something like that since the last win. Really challenging, difficult time, obviously, in 2021. And then coming back in with a car that we've not been able to fight with for the last couple of years. I think just it's been incredibly mentally challenging, I think, for everyone in the team," Hamilton began.

"I think just knowing how hard everyone's continued to work, knowing how I've managed just to keep my head in it. And then with everything that's happened this year as well, with so many emotions, obviously announcing that I'm leaving at the same time, starting with a car that we didn't feel that we could win with to then finally be in a place where we win," Hamilton explained why this win is so special to him.

Hamilton also put into perspective how long it was since he last won in Formula One himself. "It's the most incredible honour to be standing on the top of the podium and hearing the national anthem with the King's name in it, for example. It's the first time I've had that."
