Alonso criticises F1: "Only sport in which the athlete is not allowed to train"
- GPblog.com
Fernando Alonso returns to Formula 1 after two years and although he has never stopped racing, he will have to come back for a while before he returns. Renault, which next year will be called Alpine, would like to have Alonso tested, but the FIA will not allow that.
Permission from the FIA
Renault would like to give the two-time world champion the opportunity to test the current car in Arabia at the end of this year, but as this test is intended for young drivers, the FIA must give its approval. Alonso does not hide his indignation. "Formula 1 is a contradiction", he says to Speedweek.com. "It is the most demanding sport in the world, with millions and millions of investments, but it is the only one in which the athlete is not allowed to train.”
Olympic Games
Should the FIA reject Renault's request to have Alonso tested this year, the test days early next year will be the only option for the Spaniard. He would then have one and a half days to test. Alonso: "It would be unthinkable that someone who goes to the Olympics should train for one and a half days with the javelin and then travel to the Games."
Despite his criticism, Alonso is very much looking forward to his return to Formula 1. "I am returning to F1 simply because I love driving. I'm returning to a team that I'm very excited about, that was like my family. I'm coming back happy and with charged batteries."
